Davis, Jefferson

  1. A political leader of the nineteenth century. He was a powerful cabinet officer in the 1850s. When his home state of Mississippi seceded from the Union ( see secession ), Davis left the Senate to join the government of the Confederacy . He served as president of the Confederacy throughout its existence.
